Rain, Rain, Go Away!!

Our weekend was a washout.… I know many parts of the Country are in severe drought conditions, but we have had quite enough, Thank You, go on and help someone else now.

We were looking forward the the Shriner’s Melha Vintage Auto Show, but it was not meant to be. Rained out both Saturday and Sunday. The rain also kept us away from the Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Charity Car Show on Sunday.
Busy week coming up though, we are going to try to do the Cruise Night sponsored by the Elks in Ludlow, Tuesday night and another sponsored by the Moose Lodge in Chicopee on Thursday night all weather permitting of course. We just found out that we also need to be at Buttery Brook Park right here in South Hadley on Friday night too, because they are doing a special award that honors past show winners. We get to go in the line-up with other previous show winners and be judged by the attendees! Come on down and vote for us.……

Saturday, if we are not to exhausted, we’ll be at “The Cars Are The Stars” event in Somers, CT. and Sunday at the CT Children’s Place in East Windsor, CT., both benefit shows for great causes.

Fingers crossed for good weather.….…..

The Year Of the Cadillac

Or that is what everyone is saying.…. After yesterday’s fiasco, Mary Lee and I went up to Cruise Night at the Knight’s Of Columbus last night.  It was a short field with about 50 cars due to the 95+ degree heat.  The evening started out well, but they had to cut it short and abbreviate the award presentations when the dark clouds rolled in and thunder could be heard in the distance, it was only a week ago under similar weather conditions that the tornado struck just a few miles away.  Remarkable sound when you hear about 2 dozen classics all firing up at the same time and trying to squeeze out the small entry and get home.  We made it back to the barn before the real storms began.……

Alright, I won’t keep you in suspense any longer, the “Gray Lady” won first place, best in show!  She’s still batting a thousand, with 4 awards in 4 events, however, we did have to scratch, claw and climb our way up past a really nice 1930 Rolls Royce to get there.  OK, I promise this is it for a while, I’m not going to post any more show results on an event by event basis, I’ll do it once a Month to recap events.  Although you can’t really blame me for bragging a little, can you?  It has been a couple year process, with more than 3000 hours invested and mucho dinero to get us here.  Vindication is sweet, can you see the big grin on my face as I write?

Honestly, I didn’t take on this project with awards in mind, and in fact never expected them, because younger crowds tend to gravitate more towards the ’60 era muscle cars.  The Caddy generates a tremendous amount of attention where ever she goes primarily because there are never any on display.  I’ve seen just a couple 1959’s over the years, but in fact have not yet seen another 1958 in at least the last 2 years.  I did meet a guy who is restoring a 1958 Series 60 Fleetwood Special, but it won’t be done until sometime next year.

If you are local and want to visit, we’ll be at the 31st Annual Melha Shriners Classic Car Show at the Moose Lodge in Chicopee on Saturday.  It is a fundraiser for the Shriner’s Hospital For Children surely a good cause, stop by and say hello.

Till then.….….….…..

What A Day — Good & Bad

My Company has me on the road many days.  Our workhorses are GMC Savana 3500 vans.  Despite the economy we have been unusually busy these last couple of weeks, so I am looking at a schedule where I cannot book an appointment for a solid week (unusual in that we normally run a 1 — 2 day backlog).  My primary crew after doing their first two service calls, stops for gas and then cannot restart.  I run out to meet them knowing they have 6 more stops for the day and hope I can get them up and running fast.

It gets weird at this point, the truck reacts like it has a dead or weak battery, we put jumpers on it to no avail.  When the key is turned on all the dash lights and odometer begin flashing like a pinball machine, we can’t even jump the starter, now I’m getting concerned.  Nothing left to do but tow it back to the shop and try to figure it out, so 6 miles later and $90.00 lighter we start by replacing the starter relay with no result.  Stupidly, I never checked the battery voltage and as we were about to pull the starter and replace it, I decide to replace the battery.  Vroom and off she goes, apparently the battery shorted internally causing low voltage and not allowing all of the electronics to power up properly.  Back to work they go, not to finish until 7:00PM, but at least everything got done.

Now, with that done and stressed to the max, I decide to take the Caddy out to a Cruise Night.  She roars to life in the shop and I drive her the 5 miles home to pickup my wife, she is running somewhat hot, it is over 95 today, park her and take the dog for a walk.  Twenty minutes later we load up and leave, I get halfway down my street when the “Gray Lady” just up and dies.….…   Are you kidding me, am I really going to have to tow a second vehicle today.…..  Cruise night was a bust as we tried to get her going again for the next 40 minutes.  Turns out she was seriously vapor locked, an hour later we got her going, put her to bed in the shop, and called it a day.  Tomorrow has got to be better!!

A Great Day Out

We had a nice day out in Feeding Hills yesterday attending the 13th Annual Classic Car Show sponsored by the Pioneer Valley GTO Association. There were some real nice cars represented there. Best in show was a ’61 Plymouth Savoy, and I was thrilled to see a collection of many vintage Station Wagons. I was also impressed by a pair of Lincoln Mark v convertibles, one a ’58 and the other a ’60. We won a top 50 award,  but I’m not sure they really knew how to deal with us. They had top awards for Chevy, Ford, Mopar, Oldsmobile & Buick, and as usual no Cadillac award though in fairness there were only two on the field, mine and a ’76 Eldo Convertible. Seems like with a Caddy you either compete on a concours level with the mega dollar cars or take your chances in the field with the multitude of 50’s era Chevy’s, there is no real place for us. We generated an awful lot of attention from many who had never seen a car like her, it was great weather, a fine day and a great time was had by all.…..

Next week we attend the 31st Annual Melha Shriners Vintage Auto Show, see you then.….…..

Complete Chaos

Happy Birthday to me!  What was a pretty good day turned very bad very quickly yesterday at around 4:30PM.  Mary Lee and I were on our way out to a “Cruise Night” around 4:30, we had been under a tornado watch from about noontime, but the day was pretty nice, very hot and humid.  We live in Western Massachusetts, not normally considered tornado alley so we didn’t take it very seriously.  An F2 tornado formed, blazed thru the towns of Westfield, West Springfield, skipped over the Connecticut River and slamed into downtown Springfield just 5 miles from where we were going and ruined the day for many thousands of people.  Reports at this time indicate just 4 fatalities, but with many, many more injured and a great amount of property damage.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who were affected.  Surely a birthday to be remembered.….

Friday Night May 27, 2011

Mary Lee and I attended the season opener cruise night at Buttery Brook.  Met many old friends and made some new ones, there were many cars on display.  The “Gray Lady” attracted much attention as evidenced by:

First Time’s A Charm

The plan right along has been for the “Gray Lady” to make her debut at the Antique & Classic Automobile Show in Stockbridge, MA, a charity to benefit Chesterwood (the Summer Estate of Daniel Chester French, the sculptor who did the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC) on the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend.  That plan is still in place, but after a solid 2 weeks of rain we were looking for a day out and last Sunday was it.  We decided last minute to attend the Lion’s Club Charity event in Athol, MA, the “3rd Annual Dick Phillips Dust Off Car Show”.  It was a great day, cloudy with peeks of sun, nice location at Silver Lake Park and even had some live entertainment with a local blues band.  To top it all off, we were an award winner!  I’m working on a video and slideshow of the event and will have it up as soon as it is done in a week or so.

We plan on attending Cruise Night at Buttery Brook Park here in town Friday night, and visiting Stockbridge up in the Berkshires Sunday for the Chesterwood Charity Show Event.  I also have to manage my own crews working thru the Holiday weekend, and drive up to Albany, NY on Saturday to pick up my new project, a 1953 MG TD.  It is going to be a very busy time.

Till then.……

We’re Moving Forward

It seems like the hurrier I go the behinder I get.….… The weather here has not been so great, but I am plugging away putting the old gal back together.  Business has taken up a lot of my time since I got back from Florida, but we are back at it.  The recovered sun visors are back up and I’ve spent the last 2 weeks adjusting the doors, windows and installing a little bit of new door rubber.  That being done, I began to close up the doors, re-install the door panels and polish up all of the door handles, window cranks, etc.

Amazingly, the interior is now complete ( well I do have to install the 2 coat hooks just back from the plater), it sure is nice to have that part of the project done.  This week when I install the driver’s side rocker panel the exterior will also be finished ( I am still missing the driver’s side front fender badge and waiting for the passenger side tailfin letters to be plated).  It is exciting to see it all come together, now all we need is some nice weather to take her out and show her off!!  Most of the cruise nights up here will all be in full swing starting this week and we are looking forward to taking her up to the Classic Car Show at the Chesterwood Estate in Stockbridge, MA up in the Berkshires Memorial Day Weekend, weather permitting.

Today I began stripping out the trunk.  I pulled out most of the old fabric and it will all be replaced with new.  I also put the first coat of paint on the spare tire well.  I’ll re-shoot a second coat later in the day and then I can figure out how to attack this latest project in the best way.

When back in Florida 2 weeks ago, Mary Lee and I took a ride down to Miami to visit Ted Vernon’s place featured on the Discovery Channel program “South Beach Classics”.  Filming was on hiatus when we were there, but man does he have some inventory, must have been about 200 cars in 2 different buildings. Here’s a couple photos I took while there, sorry about the quality, but I did not have my camera and had to take these with my phone.  We look forward to going back again in the near future.….……

She Wakes

As I noted previously, I had picked up the rocker panels and wheel opening mouldings that were repaired over the Winter.  I also got back the headlight bezels, driver’s side mirror and door handles from the chromer.  With the weather warming recently, it was time to start putting the old gal back together.  Paul and I re-installed the wheel mouldings and headlight bezels before they got damaged just sitting on the shelves.  I’ve got a small problem with the alignment of the passenger side front fender, so she has to make a short trip back to the body shop before we can install the rocker panels.  What better way to show the old girl than with a vintage black and white photo as she rolls out for the first time this year.

We could not resist, so one hour of work and then 3 hours of play time!  I’ve got to say, she sure cleans up nice for an old gal!  We uncovered her, dusted her off and she roared to life, we then spent a couple hours touring the town and giving her a little exercise before returning to her slumber.  A couple minor issues cropped up along the way, as we pulled out, we realized we had a small tranny fluid leak over the Winter.  Not sure where it came from yet or why, but we will be checking it out over the coming days.  The only other issue was the power antenna not working, so that will have to come out, be checked and put back in, don’t know yet if it is major or minor.

More things will start happening soon.…

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day
